Gaming Desk Space Planner
Before you buy a bigger desk or a second monitor, check it will actually fit. Enter the wall space you have, the room depth behind the desk, the desk you are looking at and your monitors. The planner works out monitor widths, checks they fit on the desk, suggests a comfortable viewing distance and makes sure your chair has room to move.
How it works
- Monitor width = screen size (in) × width ÷ diagonal of the shape (0.872 for 16:9, 0.919 for 21:9, 0.963 for 32:9) × 2.54, plus about 2 cm of bezel
- Viewing distance = about 1.2-1.6 × the screen diagonal for 16:9 (a little less for ultrawide), keeping your eyes about an arm's length away
- Chair room = room depth − desk depth; 90 cm (36 in) lets you roll back and stand up comfortably
- Desk depth needed = viewing distance − about 30 cm (you sit a little back from the edge), at least 60 cm
Three things this tool can't see
- Doors and windows. Check the door swing and window glare before you place the desk.
- Stands and arms. Monitor stands vary in depth. A monitor arm frees up desk space.
- Cables and power. Plan for sockets and cable runs. A cable tray under the desk keeps it tidy.
